http://i2.ytimg.com/vi/UkwldOtOv-4/default.jpgFor the longest time, since my childhood, I have been dreaming of a world where everything was truly wireless. Of course, today, we enjoy the luxury of having wireless telephones, and wireless gamepads for our consoles, as well as being able to browse the web and view YouTube videos from the convenience of the palm of our hands. Of course, this is also limited in some way.

Eventually, we have to charge our phones, or other devices so they can continue to work. This is one of the things I've never liked. Mainly, I've always been bothered by the fact that we have to plug everything into our walls for it to function. My dream has been of a world where wireless energy transfer is possible.

What is wireless energy transfer, you ask? Well, it says it all in the name. The ability to transfer energy, wireless to any device, hence eliminating the need of ever plugging it in. Imagine a world where you can vacuum without worrying about tripping over that extremely annoying power cord. Imagine being able to use your portable devices without ever needing to put them down or charge them. Imagine never having to worry how much power is left on your device before it dies on you. And most of all, imagine being able to look at the area where you used to plug things into and not seeing that massive heap of chargers connected in a mess of wires and fire hazards.

Well, those days are coming. And they're coming sooner than you think too. A while ago, I came across this presentation that did just what I've been looking for all these years. It's a video from a Ted Conference and it's the first time I saw something like this in action.

And more recently, I read this article from CNET that explains how soon you'll be able to charge your portable device with just WiFi signals. Here's a video:

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

That means that as long as you have an internet connection, you will be able to use your device until you want to stop, not when the battery tells you it needs to be fed again.

To me, this represents an impressive step towards the future, and I'm very excited.

This is amazing! I've always wished for wireless power! And to think that that time is coming!
